Accumulator plants and hormesis

چکیده
Accumulation of metals by plants is an important area investigation in plant ecology and evolution as well soil contamination/phytoremediation practices. This paper reports that hormetic-biphasic dose-response relationships were commonly observed for multiple agents (i.e. arsenic, cadmium, chromium, fluoride, lead, zinc) 20 species (hyper)accumulator studies. The hormetic stimulation was related to metal accumulation affected tissues, with the concentration zone unique each metal, species, tissue, endpoint studied. However, quantitative features dose response similar across all (hyper)accumulation studies, results independent endpoints measured, metal. dose-dependent stimulatory inhibitory/toxic responses often associated up- down-regulation adaptive mechanisms, especially those involving anti-oxidative enzymatic processes. These findings provide a mechanistic framework account both qualitative

The occurrence of hormesis in plants and algae.
This paper evaluated the frequency, magnitude and dose/concentration range of hormesis in four species: The aquatic plant Lemna minor, the micro-alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the two terrestrial plants Tripleurospermum inodorum and Stellaria media exposed to nine herbicides and one fungicide and binary mixtures thereof. In total 687 dose-response curves were included in the database....
متن کاملScreening for accumulator plants in turquoise mine, Nyshabour (Iran). Mahlagha Ghorbanli1, Mozhgan Farzamisepehr2* and Nafiseh Sabohimogadam3
Heavy metal pollution is a worldwide problem. This study was conducted in a turquoise mine in Nyshabour (Iran) to find accumulator plant(s). Concentrations of metals were determined both in the soil and the plants growing in the mine. Concentrations of total K, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Zn, Fe and Cu in the mine area were higher than the control soil. The results showed that four dominant vegetations nam...
متن کاملScreening Ornamentals for Their Potential as As Accumulator Plants
Arsenic-based pesticides, herbicides and insecticides are used in horticultural operations resulting in soil contamination around greenhouse structures. Phytoremediation and phytostabilization are two techniques for treating arsenic (As) contaminated soil. Several ornamental plant species, Iris (Iris savannarum), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), Tithonia rotundiflora, Coreopsis lanceolata, sunfl...
متن کاملComparative enzymology of the adenosine triphosphate sulphurylases from leaf tissue of selenium-accumulator and non-accumulator plants.
1. ATP sulphurylases were partially purified (20-40-fold) from leaf tissue of Astragalus bisulcatus, Astragalus racemosus (selenium-accumulator species) and Astragalus hamosus and Astragalus sinicus (non-accumulator species). Activity was measured by sulphate-dependent PP(i)-ATP exchange. The enzymes were separated from pyrophosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase activities. The properties of ...
متن کاملHormesis and toxic torts.
Policy implementation of hormesis has to date focused on regulatory applications. Toxic-tort litigation may provide an alternative policy venue for real-world applications of hormesis. Businesses and government entities, who are sued by individuals claiming to have been injured by exposure to very low levels of toxic substances may defend those cases by deploying hormesis to argue that such exp...
